The battery in my HP laptop had aged and battery runtime had become extremely short. In winter especially, I couldn’t really use it without the AC adapter plugged in.
So I’m replacing the battery.
The model is the HP Pavilion 15-cu1005tu.
This was my first time replacing a laptop battery, but once you know the steps, the work itself isn’t difficult. The minimum required tool is a small screwdriver. The general approach should be similar for other HP Pavilion (and similar) models, so this could be useful as a reference.
About finding the replacement battery part number
I searched online for the right replacement battery, but couldn’t get a definitive answer. (I’m sure it’s findable with more thorough searching, but…) So I just opened up the bottom cover, read the part number off the existing battery, and ordered that.
Battery part number: HT03XL.
Removing the Bottom Cover
First, get the existing battery out.
To do that, remove the bottom cover.
Flip the laptop over and you’ll see screws like in the photo. Remove these — but…

…there are also hidden screws under the rubber feet.
The rubber feet are just stuck on with double-sided tape — pry them off with a utility knife. (Save the rubber feet — you’ll reuse them.)

Rubber feet removed. Circles in the next photo show all the screws to remove.

Use a precision (small) screwdriver to remove these.

The optical disc drive was also screwed to the bottom cover. I pulled it out partway.

The bottom cover is held on by snap-fit clips around the perimeter — pull to release. The hardest part was getting the right amount of force; once the disc drive came out, that gave me a working starting point. A plastic spudger / pry tool is much easier to work with than a fingernail.

Work your way around the perimeter, releasing clips little by little.

Bottom cover off. The black rectangle in the lower-right of the photo is the battery.

Removing the Battery
The battery is held by 4 screws (highlighted in the photo). Same precision screwdriver.

Battery comes out.

From the side: the battery is visibly bulged.

Installing the New Battery
The new one is, of course, flat (not bulged).
Part number: HT03XL
Price: 8,890 yen (~$60) — ordered direct from the manufacturer’s website (genuine OEM)

Reverse of removal — drop it in and screw it down. No special technique needed for installation.

Put the bottom cover back on, screw it down — done.

Battery life is back to normal — finally usable wirelessly again.
