Circular Saw vs. Jigsaw — Which Should DIY Beginners Buy First?

Circular saw or jigsaw — both are power tools for cutting wood.
“I’m thinking about buying one, but which one?” is a question a lot of DIYers wrestle with.

Circular saw and jigsaw side by side

This article tackles one of the most common questions for people starting (or leveling up) DIY: should you buy a circular saw or a jigsaw first?

My Recommendation

Short answer:

If you don’t have either yet — get the jigsaw first.

Here’s why:

The jigsaw is safer than the circular saw, and it’s more versatile (it cuts curves too).

The first thing to do is replace your hand-saw cuts with jigsaw cuts.
You’ll never want to go back to the hand saw — that’s how much easier it gets.

Especially for beginners, I’d start with the (safer) jigsaw.
I used a jigsaw exclusively when I started DIY-ing.

The circular saw has big advantages in straight-line speed and precision, but it does carry some real risk, so I can’t recommend it as a universal first power tool.

That said — I’m not telling you not to buy a circular saw first. Here’s a side-by-side to help you decide.

Comparison

What are the actual differences?

The Jigsaw

Jigsaw

The jigsaw cuts by rapidly moving the blade up and down through the workpiece — basically a power-tool version of a hand saw.
Compared to a circular saw, it’s safer and easier for beginners to handle.

It cuts straight lines and curves.
Drill a starter hole inside a panel and you can do interior pocket cuts.
Swap blades and you can cut metal too.

It’s slower and less precise than a circular saw.

  • Cuts curves
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Less precise / slower than a circular saw

You can find decent jigsaws under 10,000 yen (about $70), so it’s a relatively low-stakes power tool to start with.

The Circular Saw

Circular saw

The circular saw uses a high-speed circular blade to cut wood, specialized for straight cuts.
Fast and accurate, but with some real safety risk attached.

  • Straight cuts only
  • Excellent precision and speed
  • Carries some safety risk

You generally always cut against a guide rail or straight edge.
It really earns its keep on projects with tons of cuts — like a wood deck build.

If you’re looking to step up your DIY game, or you’ve decided this is a long-term hobby, the circular saw is a great addition.

So — that’s circular saw vs. jigsaw.

My take: if you don’t own either, start with the jigsaw.

Hope this is helpful when you’re picking your first power saw.
